‘You don’t know how to say cow in Polish’. – Co-creating and navigating language ideological assemblages in a linguistically diverse kindergarten in Germany

This study examines how language ideologies are negotiated and navigated in a linguistically diverse kindergarten group Germany, focusing on the multilingual practices of teachers children. Drawing data generated during 3months focused linguistic ethnographic fieldwork, I analyse situations which children actively include languages other than German into discourse through, e.g. translation requests, switches to family languages, references languages. An ethnomethodological approach is adopted trace participants locally assign meanings different use interaction. The findings show that express various, at times opposing ideologies, leading dynamic formation ideological assemblages. Children position themselves these assemblages by reworking them and/or foregrounding aspects their own identifications.
